The Phoenix Program conducted a short-term fieldwork for the first-year program students in Fukushima Prefecture from September 10 to 12, 2025. The objective of this field work is to understand the current status of recovery from radiation disaster in the field (protecting lives from radiation disaster, protecting the environment from radioactivity, and protecting people and society from radioactivity) from a cross-disciplinary perspective and to identify issues.
The following is a summary of what students learned during the course.
・Lecture at the environmental regeneration plaza: Initiatives for recovery from environmental contamination
・Lecture at Fukushima Medical University: Fukushima health management survey and radiation emergency medical care following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident
・Community talk in Iitate Village: Post-accident measurements of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products and soil
・Lecture for doctors and nurses in Minamisoma City: Medical care in Minamisoma City after the accident
・Tour of JAEA Naraha Center for Remote Control Technology Development: Technology development for decommissioning
・Tour of Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station: Efforts and current status toward decommissioning
Through this fieldwork, students deepened their specialties as well as gained interdisciplinary knowledge through broad learning, and learned about the current challenges facing Fukushima in its recovery efforts.
